Rules & Gameplay

Netball is a fast-paced, non-contact team sport that emphasizes precision, strategy, and teamwork. Played by two teams of seven players, the objective is to score goals by shooting the ball through the opponent’s hoop.

Game Objective

The aim is simple: score more goals than the opposing team by successfully shooting the ball into the net from within the shooting circle.

Team Structure

Each team consists of seven positions, each with specific roles and court areas:

  • Goal Shooter (GS)
  • Goal Attack (GA)
  • Wing Attack (WA)
  • Centre (C)
  • Wing Defence (WD)
  • Goal Defence (GD)
  • Goal Keeper (GK)

Court & Movement

  • The court is divided into three sections and two shooting circles
  • Players are restricted to certain areas based on their position
  • Stepping outside your designated zone results in a turnover

Core Rules

  • No running with the ball – players must pass within 3 seconds
  • Footwork rule – one foot must remain grounded when landing
  • No contact – physical contact or obstruction leads to a penalty
  • Defending distance – defenders must stay at least 3 feet (0.9m) away

Scoring

  • Only the GS and GA can shoot
  • Goals count as one point each
  • Shots must be taken from inside the shooting circle

Match Format

  • Games are typically played in four quarters, each lasting 15 minutes
  • The team with the highest score at the end wins

Gameplay Flow

The game starts with a centre pass and alternates after each goal. Teams transition quickly between attack and defense, requiring constant movement and communication.
