Sydney is gearing up to host what could become the biggest Netball World Cup in history, with organisers unveiling an ambitious target of more than 200,000 attendees across 64 matches when the world’s best netballers arrive in the city in just one year’s time.
If achieved, the target would make Netball World Cup Sydney 2027 (NWC2027) the most-attended edition of the tournament ever staged.
To mark the official one-year countdown, organisers made a spectacular statement on Sydney Harbour, where a floating netball court appeared against one of the world’s most iconic backdrops.
The special event brought together senior government representatives, stakeholders from Netball Australia and World Netball, Australian Diamonds players, Jamaican international Shamera Sterling-Humphrey, and members of the netball community.
A Bold Vision for Sydney 2027
NWC2027 Organising Committee and Netball Australia Chair Liz Ellis AO said the goal is to set a new benchmark for the sport.
“We want Sydney 2027 to set a new benchmark for our sport.
“More than 200,000 attendees would make it the highest-attended Netball World Cup in history, and today’s scenes on Sydney Harbour gave us a glimpse of just how special it can be.
“Alongside our Federal Government, NSW Government and commercial partners, we’re working hard every day to bring new thinking and innovation to this tournament so that existing and new fans of the sport experience something unique.
“Brace yourself because we’re just getting started.”
The tournament’s Official Fan Travel and Hospitality Partner, Quint, also launched travel and hospitality packages as part of the one-year countdown, offering fans access to premium experiences and tailored event packages.
Government Support and a Major Boost for Sydney
Federal Minister for Sport Anika Wells said the tournament would provide an opportunity to showcase women’s sport while creating long-term benefits for communities across Australia.
The Australian Government has committed $6 million towards the event, which is expected to inspire more women and girls to participate in sport while bringing the world’s best netballers to Australian shores.
NSW Minister for Sport, Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper MP said Sydney was ready to host the largest Netball World Cup in the tournament’s history.
With major sporting venues, passionate fans and extensive experience hosting international events, Sydney is expected to welcome visitors from across Australia and around the world.
The tournament is also set to provide a significant boost to the NSW visitor economy, with fans supporting local hotels, restaurants, shops and other businesses throughout the event.
Diamonds Ready for a Home World Cup
The Australian Diamonds are expected to enter NWC2027 as one of the tournament favourites following their bronze-medal finish at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Australia remained unbeaten throughout the pool stage before suffering a dramatic 46–45 semi-final defeat to Jamaica. The result marked the first time the Diamonds had failed to reach a Commonwealth Games netball final since the sport joined the Games in 1998.
Diamonds captain Liz Watson said the opportunity to respond on home soil is a major source of motivation.
“To have the chance to respond at a Netball World Cup on home soil, in front of a huge Australian crowd, is incredibly motivating.
“We’re excited to make Australia proud and embrace all of the amazing support and excitement that is already building.”
The Road to Netball World Cup Sydney 2027
With one year remaining until the tournament, excitement is continuing to build.
Eight nations have already secured their place at NWC2027, while the remaining eight spots will be decided through four Regional Qualifiers taking place around the world throughout 2026.
