New Zealand Defeat Scotland in Tournament Opener
Hosts Scotland opened the competition against world No. 2 New Zealand in the third Commonwealth Games meeting between the two nations.
Backed by a passionate home crowd, the Thistles matched the Silver Ferns during the opening stages, staying within striking distance through the first quarter. However, New Zealand gradually took control, building a 35–24 advantage by halftime.
Scotland continued to battle throughout the second half and recorded their second-highest score ever against New Zealand, but the Silver Ferns’ quality ultimately proved decisive as they secured a convincing 74–44 victory.
Australia Cruise Past Commonwealth Debutants Tonga
Defending champions Australia began their title defence against Commonwealth Games newcomers Tonga.
The opening minutes were closely contested, with just a single goal separating the teams after five minutes of play. The Diamonds soon settled into their rhythm, producing an impressive attacking display to establish a 23–12 lead at the first break.
Australia maintained complete control throughout the contest, rotating all 12 squad members while extending their advantage to record a dominant 99–38 victory.
England Mark Milestone Match with Comfortable Win
England celebrated their 50th Commonwealth Games netball match with an emphatic performance against Northern Ireland.
Although the opening exchanges were evenly matched, the Roses steadily increased the pressure, forcing repeated turnovers and taking a commanding 41–18 lead into halftime.
England’s defensive unit continued to frustrate Northern Ireland throughout the second half, finishing the match with 20 gains while producing one of their strongest attacking performances.
The Roses eventually claimed an impressive 83–34 victory, registering their fourth-highest Commonwealth Games score.
Uganda Finish Strong to Defeat Wales
One of the day’s most anticipated contests featured Uganda against Wales, with the closely ranked teams producing an entertaining battle.
Uganda edged the opening quarter to lead by two goals before Wales responded brilliantly in the second period. Strong performances from Bethan Dyke and Georgia Rowe helped the Welsh Feathers overturn the deficit and move five goals ahead at halftime.
The She Cranes produced an outstanding second-half comeback, using clinical finishing and a remarkable 97% shooting accuracy to reclaim control and earn a deserved 59–50 victory.
Jamaica Dominate Regional Rivals
The fifth match of the day featured an all-Americas clash as Jamaica faced Trinidad & Tobago.
The Sunshine Girls controlled proceedings from the opening whistle, with defender Latanya Wilson producing several key interceptions to help Jamaica establish a commanding 43–12 halftime advantage.
Despite a determined effort from Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica maintained their intensity throughout the second half and never allowed their opponents back into the contest.
The Sunshine Girls completed a comprehensive 81–22 victory, with Azara Wilmot enjoying an impressive debut after scoring 33 goals.
South Africa Finish Day One with Victory Over Malawi
The final match of the opening day saw South Africa take on Malawi in their fifth Commonwealth Games meeting.
The teams traded goals throughout an entertaining opening quarter before South Africa’s patient ball movement and disciplined attack helped them establish a 34–23 halftime lead.
Malawi reached a significant milestone by scoring their 2,000th Commonwealth Games goal during the third quarter, but South Africa continued to dictate play and finished strongly to secure a 65–44 victory.
