Victoria has reclaimed the Marie Little Shield after producing a composed and determined performance to defeat New South Wales 25-19 in the 2026 decider at Narrandjeri Stadium in Thornbury.

The result capped off three days of competitive and celebratory all-abilities netball, with representative teams from all eight Australian states and territories coming together to compete for one of the sport’s most important national titles.

Victoria’s victory was particularly significant because it came against a New South Wales side that had already defeated the eventual champions earlier in the tournament. After losing 17-14 during the pool stage, Victoria responded when it mattered most, delivering a stronger defensive effort, greater attacking patience and the composure required to close out a high-pressure final.

The tournament once again demonstrated the depth, enthusiasm and inclusive spirit of Australian netball. Alongside the on-court competition, the event provided athletes with opportunities to represent their states, build connections and celebrate the sport in a welcoming environment.

Victoria Ends NSW’s Winning Run

Victoria entered the final with a clear objective: reverse the result from the earlier pool-round meeting and prevent New South Wales from claiming another Marie Little Shield.

NSW had looked strong throughout the opening stages of the tournament and carried the confidence of a team that had won the previous two titles. Its 17-14 victory over Victoria in the pool phase appeared to give the defending champions an early advantage, but the rematch revealed a different Victorian side.

From the opening whistle, Victoria played with urgency and purpose. Its defensive pressure disrupted NSW’s early attacking rhythm, while accurate shooting allowed the Victorian team to establish a commanding 9-3 lead.

The fast start placed New South Wales under immediate pressure. Victoria moved the ball effectively through the centre third, created space in the goal circle and made the most of its early opportunities. NSW, however, showed the resilience that had carried it to consecutive championships.

The defending champions settled during the second term and began to reduce the margin. Improved movement through the midcourt helped NSW find more consistent access to the shooting circle, while its defensive unit worked hard to limit Victoria’s scoring opportunities.

By half-time, the gap had been reduced to just two goals, with Victoria leading 11-9. The narrow margin ensured the final remained evenly poised, but Victoria had already shown that it could withstand NSW’s pressure.

The third term proved decisive. Victoria regained control of the contest through disciplined passing, strong defensive positioning and patient attacking play. Rather than allowing NSW to dictate the tempo, Victoria maintained its structure and gradually extended the advantage.

At the final change, Victoria held a five-goal lead. NSW continued to fight during the closing term, but Victoria remained composed and protected its advantage. The Victorian side finished strongly to secure a 25-19 victory and reclaim the Marie Little Shield for the first time since 2023.

The result ended NSW’s run of back-to-back titles and confirmed Victoria’s ability to respond after an earlier tournament setback. It was a performance built on improvement, consistency and belief, with the team producing its best netball when the championship was at stake.

Western Australia Secures Bronze

Western Australia completed the podium after defeating South Australia 32-22 in the third-place play-off.

The bronze-medal match provided WA with an opportunity to finish the tournament on a high after a competitive campaign. The side entered the contest with confidence, having already recorded a 10-goal victory over the South Australian Rubies during the pool stage.

That earlier result gave Western Australia valuable belief, but the team still needed to produce a focused performance in the play-off. WA did exactly that, combining strong attacking movement with disciplined defensive pressure to gradually pull away from South Australia.

The Western Australian attack was particularly effective in creating space and maintaining possession. Patient build-up play allowed the team to generate high-quality shooting opportunities, while its defensive unit worked hard to restrict South Australia’s access to the circle.

South Australia continued to compete throughout the match, but Western Australia’s consistency proved decisive. The 32-22 result secured the bronze medal and ended WA’s run of fourth-place finishes at the Marie Little Shield.

The final standings saw Victoria claim gold, New South Wales take silver and Western Australia finish with bronze. For all three teams, the results reflected the quality of their performances across the three-day tournament.

Individual Awards Recognise Outstanding Performances

The tournament also provided an opportunity to recognise athletes who made significant contributions on and off the court.

South Australia celebrated individual success, with Isabella Inancic-Holland named the Marie Little Shield Most Valuable Player. Her performances across the tournament stood out for their consistency, versatility and influence in key areas of the court.

Inancic-Holland made an impact in both the goal circle and centre, demonstrating her ability to contribute in attack while also helping her team maintain momentum through the midcourt. Her work rate, decision-making and composure made her one of the most influential players of the competition.

The award was a significant achievement for Inancic-Holland and highlighted the quality of South Australia’s campaign, despite the team missing out on a place in the medal matches.

Samantha Walker was presented with the Naomi Perry Spirit Award, recognising her sportsmanship, enthusiasm and positive contribution throughout the tournament.

The award reflects the values that sit at the heart of the Marie Little Shield. While performance and results remain important, the competition also celebrates respect, encouragement, teamwork and the ability to create a positive environment for everyone involved.
