World Netball is deeply saddened by the passing of Chris Burton OAM, a World Netball Service Award recipient and Netball Australia Hall of Fame Legend. Widely respected across Australian and international netball, Chris leaves behind an extraordinary legacy as a player, umpire, administrator, educator and mentor.
An Australian Diamond and one of the sport’s most influential figures, Chris dedicated her life to the growth and development of netball at every level.
Her journey in elite netball began with her home state of South Australia before she earned selection for the Australian national team in 1964. Chris went on to represent Australia for more than a decade and served as vice-captain from 1972 to 1975.
During her international playing career, she competed at two Netball World Cups, winning silver in 1967 before helping Australia claim gold in 1975.
Remarkably, Chris was also recognised as an umpire during her playing career, earning the prestigious All Australia Umpires Badge.
Following her retirement from playing, Chris continued to make an enormous contribution to the sport. She umpired at Netball Australia National Championships for 13 years and also officiated in the National Super League.
Her influence extended well beyond Australia. Chris officiated at three Netball World Cups and one World Games, while also serving on Umpires Appointment Panels at numerous Netball World Cups, Commonwealth Games and Netball World Youth Cups.
From 1991 to 2012, Chris served as Netball Australia’s National Director of Umpiring. Throughout this time, she was passionate about developing and supporting umpires—not only in Australia but across the global netball community. She understood the vital role high-quality umpiring played in the development of players and the continued growth of the game.
Chris also contributed her extensive knowledge through long-standing involvement with World Netball’s Rules Committee, Umpires Committee and International Testing Panel.
In 1999, she was elected to the World Netball Board, where she served with distinction until 2007.
Her exceptional contribution to netball was recognised through numerous honours, including the World Netball Service Award, Netball Australia Life Membership, the Netball Australia Service Award and the Medal of the Order of Australia.
In 2022, Chris received one of Australian netball’s highest honours when she was elevated to Legend status in the Netball Australia Hall of Fame.
Chris Burton OAM helped shape the game as we know it today. From representing her country on the court to developing generations of umpires and contributing to the sport’s administration and international growth, her impact was felt across every level of netball.
Her legacy will continue to inspire players, umpires, coaches and administrators for generations to come.
