Have a Plan
Preparation is key, so don’t leave everything until the last minute.
-
Give yourself enough time to prepare. Make sure you have trained consistently and are physically fit before trials begin.
-
Identify your strengths and areas for improvement. Ask your coaches for feedback if needed so you know what to focus on in the lead-up to selections.
-
Set clear goals. Having a plan can help you train with purpose and build confidence before trial day.
Practice the Basics
Strong fundamentals are essential to performing well in netball, especially under pressure.
-
Footwork and passing should always be a priority. Keep practising the basics until they become second nature.
-
Shooters: Get to the post as often as possible and work on consistency, accuracy and confidence.
-
Midcourt and defensive players: Extra training is just as important for you. Every position requires specific skills and dedicated practice.
-
WA/C: Focus on pass placement, quick hands, touch on the ball and fast decision-making.
-
WD/C/Circle Defence: Work on elevation, footwork, defensive positioning and closing speed.
-
Make Sure You’re Physically Ready
Fitness plays a huge role in trial performance. Work on the physical qualities that will help you perform at your best, including:
-
Fitness and endurance
-
Speed
-
Acceleration and change of pace
-
Agility
-
Strength and power
Prepare Mentally
Not every trial will go exactly as planned, and that’s okay.
Stay positive, reset quickly after mistakes and remember that every time you step onto the court is another opportunity to show what you can do. Don’t let one bad pass, missed shot or mistake define your entire trial.
Challenge Yourself in Training
Train with purpose—don’t simply go through the motions.
Push yourself outside your comfort zone and prepare for the conditions you may face during trials. If you’re likely to be trialling in hot weather, include some training sessions in warmer conditions so your body can adapt.
Just remember: always prioritise hydration and recovery when training in the heat.
Final Reminder
Preparation builds confidence. Have a plan, master the basics, improve your fitness, strengthen your mindset and challenge yourself in training. The work you put in before trials can help you step onto the court feeling prepared and ready to show your best.
