ANZ Premiership Round 1: Global Stars Set the Tone

The ANZ Premiership is officially back, with all six teams opening their campaigns in an exciting first round streamed worldwide via NetballPass.

Throughout the season, we’ll be spotlighting standout international talent—on the court and across our digital channels—highlighting the players making an impact from around the globe.

Here’s how Round 1 unfolded:

Pulse vs Magic

The season opener delivered a strong statement from Pulse, who controlled the game from start to finish to secure a 53–45 win over Magic.

Despite fielding a youthful and refreshed lineup, Pulse showed composure early, energizing their home crowd with a confident display. Their depth was evident, rotating through all ten players seamlessly.

Two debutants made an immediate impression. South Africa’s Ine-Marí Venter led the attack with 32 goals, settling quickly into the pace of the competition. Meanwhile, rising Kiwi talent Holly Comyns turned heads in defense, contributing multiple gains and disruptions in her first league appearance.

Magic showed resilience after halftime, but the early gap proved too much to overcome.

Tactix vs Steel

Defending champions Tactix opened their title defense in style, claiming a convincing 55–42 victory over Steel.

After a steady start, Tactix found their rhythm and took control across the court. Australian shooter Charlie Bell was clinical in attack, converting the majority of her opportunities, while Ashlee Barnett anchored the defense with key interceptions.

Steel struggled to match the consistency and intensity, allowing Tactix to build and maintain a comfortable lead.

Stars vs Mystics

The final match of the round delivered the drama, with Stars edging Mystics 63–59 in a tightly contested clash.

Both sides traded momentum in the first half, heading into the break with little separating them. Stars, however, emerged with renewed energy, determined to shift their recent form.

Midcourt precision from Mila Reuelu-Buchanan created scoring opportunities, while Kate Burley dominated defensively with multiple interceptions.

Mystics fought back to level the game late in the third quarter, setting up a tense finish. But Stars held their nerve in the final quarter, pulling away to secure a hard-earned win.

Round 1 Takeaway

Opening weekend delivered intensity, fresh talent, and standout international performances—setting the tone for what promises to be a thrilling season ahead.
